American Legion Post 735, Hiawatha, Iowa

Avenue of Flags

The Avenue of Flags is an American Legion Post 735 sponsored program to promote patriotism in the City of Hiawatha. Flags are put out at dawn and taken in at dusk on five (5) patriotic holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

Post 735 installs a metal flag holder near your curb (installed low enough not to interfere with mowing/trimming and also not a trip hazard). The Post paints a small white marker on the city curb directly in front of the holder (painting of these marks is approved by the city). On the designated days, Post members and volunteers (Boy Scouts, youth program members, HFD, Post members, etc.) will install and retrieve flags at sunrise and sunset respectively.

For 2021, the cost of the annual subcription is $40.00 for a flag and a second flag for an additional $25.00. Yes, our cost for the first flag did go up by $5 to cover the increasing cost of materials to maintain flags and build new flags.  This is our first cost increase in 17 years.

A common question is, "What does the Post do with the money raised from the Avenue of Flags?" Post 735 actively supports an array of youth activities with these funds, ranging from youth t-ball, mock trial teams, American Legion Baseball teams, and essay contests, as well as other activities as they are brough forward by community members.
